EMR scanning is the very import part between paper-based records/forms and paperless information management. Secure, accurate medical records scanning is critical for both quality of care and legal compliance. However, the scan-to-EMR process is often a costly and cumbersome step in otherwise efficient offices. Whether in a small practice or a large hospital, employees have precious little time to spend scanning stacks of documents.
In most cases, much of this paper arrives via fax and is still printed. Employees must not only collect the faxed pages and manually scan each one into the EMR, but also take great care to comply with HIPAA regulations about visibility of protected health information (PHI). As health care costs rise and budgets decrease, this laborious process may become unsustainable.
